Credit card APR ranges
APR is the interest rate the issuer can charge on balances that do not get paid in full. The public CFPB survey shows the range by product and often by credit tier, which makes it a useful comparison reference but not a promise of your exact offer.
What the survey fields mean
- Purchase APR is the interest rate on purchases that carry a balance.
- Intro APR is the temporary promotional rate, if the product offers one.
- Balance transfer APR applies to balances moved from another account.
- Cash advance APR applies to cash withdrawals and similar advance transactions.
How to use the ranges
Start with the purchase APR range, then compare the grace period and annual fee. If the card's rewards only matter when you pay in full, a lower APR does not make it a better earn card. If you carry balances, APR can matter more than the headline multiplier.
